koala: the other red meat
large problem in sydney, australia, with koalas getting hit by passing vehicles [609 were hit last year, 146 died]. to combat the issue, the Redlands Shire Council has decided that, instead of removing the koala carcuses from the sides of roads after being hit, they're going to paint them flourescent red and leave them there for a day or so [i've been driving by the same dead cat every day for two weeks now. i say 24 hours is a speedy cleanup]. the purpose? to "warn other motorists to look out for the cuddly but slow-moving marsupials". apparantly, the only backlash anticipated is frightening little children. how 'bout scaring the fuck out of your average driver? what could be more freeky in the middle of nowhere australia at two in the morning than seeing a big-ass flourescent red pissed-off koala that somebody thought was dead limping across the highway toward your car looking for a rematch? here's the article.
