they're getting smarter
sony's aibo dogs are now being equipped with an open-ended learning system which sony calls a "meta brain". these new versions of the already kick-ass robot dog are actually able to exhibit curiosity about things which are new to it. to quote, the dogs have a sense of "self-awareness" [repressing "robots-get-smart-and kill-all-humans" instinct] regarding their own learning system. a commenter following a related article said that he had had the pleasure of seeing one of these dogs slowly teach itself [over the course of a few hours] to move toward a pink ball on the ground simply because it was "interested" in it. i want one. somebody buy me one. this one.
